A: Both birds are up in weight and have passed live prey assessment. Both birds have
minor scabs on toes and cere wounds from clinging and running into wire. 25-628 has
a larger scab on the cere, so should prioritize releasing them as soon as possible.

A: Difficult to get birds to make good flights as they were constantly clinging to
wire. 25-628 did have a slight wing droop when stressfully looking around to a place
to get away. Could not see how bird holds wing when calm, but flights looked decent.

O: Bucket cleaned and changed water. Removed 29 g of scrap and one cast. Exercised
birds for ~4 lengths. Dropped 164 g of chick and rabbit.

A: Both BAR. Did not push exercise because of wet conditions. Birds are also difficult
to exercise since they are prone to clinging. May consider moving them to OF if it
becomes available soon. 628 may be holding wings strangely in order to balance, but we'll want to keep a close eye on it.

Procedure - Evisceration

Surgery time - 25 minutes

Pre-medicated with torb IM.  Anesthetized via isoflurane facemask,
then intubated with 3-0 uncuffed ET tube.  Placed bird in dorsal
recumbency, plucked feathers and scrubbed eyelids around L eye.
 Placed drop of proparacine in OS.  Incised cornea with #15 blade,
removed cornea with iris scissors.  Large blood clot present
in front of intact lens.  Removed all intraocular contents, trauma
to the sclera with lots of bleeding.  Had to hold pressure for
a long time and apply curapson multiple times until bleeding
finally stopped.  Removed third eyelid and eyelids via sharp
dissection.  Closed eyelids with 5-0 webcryl in simple interrupted
pattern.  Recovered uneventfully from anesthesia.

S: Facing forward with L eye to front of cage, did not act visual in the L eye.

O: No bleeding in mouth or nares. OS is no longer deflated or draining but there is no blink response and a large corneal ulcer is visible without stain over the lateral half of the cornea. Unable to see anything when looking into the eye. Chorioretinal scarring present in OD, bird acting visual in this eye. Bruising resolving AS.

A: Adult barred owl hit by car, sustained significant ocular trauma but should retain vision in right eye. Currently also suffering from head trauma and is non reactive to visual stimuli. Very guarded prognosis but will monitor neuro issues and vision over the weekend and re-evaluate

P: Rx Meloxicam, Gabapentin, Fluids. Monitor for blood in nares and mouth. Monitor temp - can likely move out of incubator tomorrow. Collect blood, fecal, IOPs. Plan for evisceration next week if continuing care and stable enough.
